Around ten per cent of pituitary tumours are the cause of Cushing's disease. Such tumours (corticotroph cell adenomas), may be as small as 2mm in diameter and may be located in the centre of the gland. It is therefore unusual for these adenomas to be associated with a radiological abnormality of the pituitary fossa or with hypopituitarism.
